About Farmers on the Rise Apprenticeship
We launched FARMERS ON THE RISE Youth Apprenticeship in 2022 hosting eleven teens
through a paid, ten-week intensive of skills-building and hands-on practice.
Apprentices learned plant identification, seeding, transplanting, weeding, pest management, and harvesting
plus received instruction in mushroom production, beekeeping, native plants, and financial management.
They also learned to collaborate with others, lead volunteers, and talk to groups.
We built the summer program after having hosted 30 students weekly for job skills training
throughout the academic year since 2019, and from being a Growing Growers host farm.
Farm Director Lydia Nebel and Executive Director Alicia Ellingsworth lead the effort
and have been teaching aspiring farmers for a combined 25 years.
In 2022, we received generous community support from The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation,
Joe and Jeanne Brandmeyer, Church of the Resurrection, the Shumaker Family Foundation,
and the USDA Farm to School program.
We’d love to have your support, too.
